My 10-Year-Old DJI Osmo Still Surprises Me
In a world where camera technology evolves every year, it’s easy to forget how good older gear can still be. Recently, I was reminded of that when I picked up my old DJI Osmo, a device that’s been with me for almost 10 years. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from it anymore -- I have newer gimbals, multiple Sony cameras, and a full professional setup ready anytime. But this little Osmo proved me wrong. Again.
A Backup That Outperformed the Main Camera
During a shoot, I used the Osmo purely as a backup. The main videographer I hired brought a Sony A7 -- a very capable camera that should deliver excellent 4K quality when set correctly. But when I reviewed the footage, something unexpected happened. The Osmo’s 4K footage looked better. Specifically, the cloud shots had more detail and clarity compared to the Sony’s output. I’m aware that it was most likely a settings issue on the A7 (and yes, settings can make or break any shot), but still, it was impressive to see a decade-old compact device outperform a modern camera in certain situations. It reminded me why I bought the Osmo in the first place, consistent color, beautiful detail, and reliable stabilization even when you’re moving fast.
Run-and-Gun Convenience
Just recently, I used it again for a run-and-gun shoot. I had all my gear with me, Sony bodies, lenses, newer gimbals but the Osmo was just sitting there, ready to go. So I grabbed it.
And again, the footage was surprising. Sharp. Stable. Clean. For a device released a decade ago, that’s saying something. The best part? DJI still supports the old app, so using it in 2025 is still smooth and hassle-free.
Will I Continue Using It?
Absolutely. Not as my main camera, of course, but as a reliable backup, a quick grab-and-shoot tool, and a reminder that great storytelling doesn’t always require the latest gear. Sometimes, the old tools still hold their ground and even outperform expectations.
The DJI Osmo may be 10 years old, but it still delivers, and for me, that’s worth keeping in the bag.
